Biography

David Hall is Professor and Principal Specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital.  After qualifying as a specialist at Stellenbosch University and the College of Medicine of South Africa he joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology where he is still workingDavid completed his doctorate in 1999 and registered as a sub-specialist in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the initiation of the sub-specialty in South Africa in 2006.  He is the Programme Director for Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Stellenbosch University and has acted as national chairperson for the South African Society of Maternal and Fetal Medicine.  David leads a tertiary obstetric service, the Obstetric Special Care Unit.  His special interests in research include hypertensive disorders, diabetes, preterm birth, mid-trimester loss and other medical disorders of pregnancy.  This research performed both locally and through international collaboration has been published widely in accredited journals and textbooks and he is regularly invited to address national and international meetings (H index = 33) David is a reviewer for many international journals and has been honoured with four Rector’s awards at his university, including one for excellence in teaching.  He served as an assessor for the National Committee of Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths for 15 years and is currently the vice-president of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy.  Having a Master’s qualification in Applied Ethics, David has a special interest in bioethics and served two terms on the Faculty Health Research Ethics Committee.
